The Miami Boat Show proved very interesting this year, thanks in particular to all the new products on display. Boating enthusiasts were treated to a veritable feast of new treats. Here’s a quick summary of the most remarkable.

2013 Azimut 55S
Ever since its worldwide launch at the Cannes Boat Show, the Azimut 55S has been garnering a lot of attention with its gorgeous lines and terrific new layout. Positioned between the 40S and 62S Italia, the Azimut 55S bridges the gap between two sizeable – and pricey – existing models.

At 55 feet, the Azimut 55S is practically a floating palace, and yet it is small enough to be practical and enjoyable to use in Canada. It features an IPS 600 triple-pod drive, which includes 435-hp Volvo engines. This type of system is both smaller and lighter than a traditional shaft-drive configuration, which translates into improved fuel economy and superior manoeuverability. With the engines located at the aft of the vessel, there is room up front for cargo and a garage in back for storing a jet tender.

The Azimut 55S’ style reflects the modern lines seen on other models in the line. The front section is more angular, whereas the rear bow includes an automobile-inspired grille. On the lower deck, windows span nearly the entire length of the boat. Stairs in back lead to the platform and cockpit. It goes without saying that the interior is very luxurious and the attention-to-detail is noticeable. Perhaps the most noteworthy element is the single-level floor that runs from the back of the boat to the cockpit, creating an immense open space. We loved the spacious feel and 360-degree visibility.

Cigarette Racing AMG Electric Drive Concept
Manufacturer Cigarette Racing’s shtick is to unveil exclusive models inspired by Mercedes-Benz’s AMG models. This year was no exception with the Miami launch of the AMG Electric Drive 38’ Top Gun, a 100% electric boat inspired by the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive. At 38 feet, this vessel is equipped with 12 electric motors (six per drive) that produce a total of 1,656 kilowatts (2,220 horsepower) and 2,213 lbs.-ft. of torque. That makes it the most powerful electric boat in the world!

According to AMG, recharging the lithium-ion batteries takes a little less than 10 hours using a 220-volt outlet, which are not uncommon at marinas. Its range is apparently 15 minutes at low speed, half an hour at a cruising speed of 70 mph with a few sprints to 100 mph, and finally another 15 minutes to head home. In all, that’s about an hour. Finally, high-performance boating and the environment are not mutually exclusive!

Four Winns Sundowner 265
Four Winns introduced the Sundowner 265, now the largest of its sleeper boats. At 26 feet, the Sundowner 265 RS offers all the pleasures of boating in addition to the space and amenities for a longer trip. Despite its generous dimensions, it’s easy to tow – and added bonus on the practical front!

The two trims are the SS and the vibrantly coloured RS. The Sundowner 265 sets itself apart with a spacious cockpit that makes it easy to get around on board. A passage under a removable section of the sunpad allows you to climb aboard from the swim platform. On board, the attention to detail is obvious, especially the soft cloth that covers the driver’s console. The cabin can comfortably accommodate two adults, whose overnight stay will be made more comfortable with a sink, toilet and refrigerator.

Regal 3200
Large bowriders are the hottest trend right now, and that’s exactly what you get with the new Regal 3200. Thirty-two feet long and 10.5 feet wide, this model offers hard-to-beat versatility, while combining the best of many different boat styles. The dual ultralounge seats in back can accommodate four passengers and be configured in six different ways for a singular relaxation experience.

The vessel’s extra width means there’s room for several features – including a refreshment centre – and an impressive amount of space leftover. The closed bathroom is very practical, while the open area up front is another handy space for enjoying the ride and relaxing. The Regal 3200 commands respect with its size, and its dynamic style is enhanced by a PowerTower that folds electronically. In terms of performance, many different drivetrains are available, including an all-new Volvo V8-380 engine.

Sea Ray 370 Venture
You can’t accuse Sea Ray of failing to innovate. Its 370 Venture express cruiser may look ordinary at first glance, but it’s actually equipped with a very unique drivetrain that includes twin outboard motors concealed under boxes. What are the advantages? A silent ride like no other, as the motors are outside the boat. Plus, there’s more space, meaning you get full use of the cockpit area. The same goes in the mid-cabin, which can be moved back and capitalizes on some of the space normally used by the engines.

The most interesting aspect about it is the way Sea Ray has integrated all its components. The result is both stylish and practical, as the engine boxes form a sun pad. Another advantage of this drivetrain is that the vessel is lighter overall compared to a boat with a traditional drivetrain, and consequently it requires less fuel.

Chaparral 257 SSX
Chaparral took advantage of the Miami Boat Show to introduce the 257 SSX, a model that belongs to the new generation of luxury bowriders from this manufacturer. This model is decidedly sporty, with vibrant graphics and a wakeboard tower. It has several interesting features, including an L-shaped seat in back that can be set up in different ways. The central passage in the back is flanked by two benches that can be folded into lounge chairs – perfect for chilling under the sun.The 257 SSX is offered with either a Volvo or Mercury drivetrain, with some engines capable of delivering 430 horsepower. That’s more than enough to make this into a true sport boat.

Joystick-controlled outboard engines
Volvo and Mercury have both introduced, in recent years, joystick control on their boats with inboards and sterndrive engines. This technology simplifies low-speed manoeuvres, especially docking. You simply rotate or slide the joystick to pivot the boat or move it sideways. This eliminates most of the stress of operating a large vessel in tight spaces.

This year, Mercury and Evinrude have inaugurated the same technology, but for outboard engines. Evinrude’s Optimus 360 system allows the engines to operate independently, including rotation and thrust direction. This combination makes it possible to direct the boat in any direction and eliminates the need for a bow thruster. Simplified mooring is no longer just for boats with interior engines.
