Boat-builder Azimut Yachts is expected to introduce its all-new model, the 55S, next September at the Cannes International Boat and Yacht Show (also known as the Festival de Plaisance de Cannes). This boat joins Azimut’s sportscruiser S line. The 55S will position itself between the 43S and 62S Italia, thereby closing what has been a fairly significant gap between models. And given its dimensions, it’s sure to appeal to many.

Azimut decided to equip the 55S with an IPS 600 triple pod drive installation, including 435-horsepower Volvo engines, as this option is smaller and lighter than a more conventional shaft-drive configuration. This unit also brings the benefit of improved fuel economy and better manoeuvrability. Thanks to the forward position of the propulsion unit, there is room for a crew cabin in front, as well as a garage for storing a jet tender in the back.

But what about its style? This vessel is designed in the same vein as the other models in the S line-up, which is to say that it has decidedly modern esthetics. The front end is angular and features an integrated grille in the bow – much like what you’d find on a car. Expansive windows characterize the lower decks, with one window stretching almost the entire length of the boat. Stairs in the rear lead to the platform and cockpit. Naturally, the interior is elegantly appointed and the attention to detail is obvious. Since the boat was designed to keep weight to a minimum, many components are made from light and sturdy carbon fibre.
