Italian builder Azimut took advantage of the latest Boat Show held in Genoa, Italy, to unveil the latest offspring of its Magellano line, the Magellano 50. This yacht differs from the builder’s other models not only by her unique design, but also by her optional hybrid propulsion system, which ensures superior fuel efficiency and a higher level of eco-compatibility.

The core of her technology lies in her Easy Hybrid propulsion system, created by Azimut’s research and development department. This unique project allows the craft to cruise at up to eight knots, using only her electric motors. This enables the yacht to cruise much more quietly, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The Easy Hybrid system is made of two electric motors, mounted between the transmission and the propulsion system, developing an output of 23 kW. These motors, which use a series of lithium-ion batteries, are coupled to two 5.9 L Mercruisel Cummins diesel engines, each developing 425 hp. Since this is a dual-mode system, at low rpm mode, only the electric motors are running, while the diesel motorization starts automatically at higher speeds. Interestingly, it’s the yacht’s generator that boosts the batteries, not the diesel engines.

In addition to the propulsion system, the Magellano is also fitted with several other technologies designed to improve her efficiency. These include a dual-mode hull whose style is a cross between the traditional V configuration and rounder hulls, while the lighting system uses energy-efficient LED bulbs with an almost indefinite life.

The Magellano 50 takes her place in the line beside the 74-foot model, and will soon be followed by a more compact 40-foot model.
