For most of us, boating season ends when our lakes and rivers freeze over. Sad, isn’t it? Winter seems especially long to boating enthusiasts, who console themselves as best they can by thinking ahead to next summer and remembering the good times they had under the sun. Luckily, there are a number of boating-related activities that can get us through the winter season. Here are a few.

First, it’s always fun to scan the  classified ad sites to check out which enticing models are up for sale. Who hasn’t seen a bigger, better or newer boat? Even if you’re not in the market for a boat, the classifieds let you dream a little, learn something new or simply check out new models. The hard part is resisting the temptation to buy when you stumble onto a boat you love that is being sold at a great price.

There are also various boat shows that will let you dive back into the world of boating. They are the best place for people to go if they’re dreaming of buying a boat. All models are under the same roof, and purchasing a boat in the winter means you will definitely have your new baby as soon as spring starts. Otherwise, you can simply check out new features or indulge in the equipment and accessories sold in the various stands. Why not combine a boat show and some sun by visiting the Miami International Boat Show, the biggest of them all? It’s a pilgrimage that shouldn’t be missed by anyone who wants to see the greatest variety of models sold anywhere in the world.

If you have access to your boat during the winter, you can take advantage of the time to give it a complete tune-up and makeover. You have the entire winter to get your boat ship-shape, so you won’t have to rush once spring is here.

The luckiest among us will leap at the opportunity to rent a boat in hotter climes and take a dream voyage in some corner of paradise, especially the British Virgin Islands. Several companies specialize in sailboat or motorboat rentals, making it possible for you to enjoy some unforgettable experiences without breaking the bank. We were lucky enough to write about it a few years ago. It was truly memorable.

Fans of water sports can also fall back on indoor surfing centres, which are becoming increasingly popular. It’s the best way to perfect your surfing or waterboarding technique without getting cold or (even better) using any gas.

In short, despite the cold, winter is a great time for a number of nautical activities, and this enforced break only means we can appreciate the summer even more.
